Sciatica pain exercises can help to minimize the pain of this condition.  Sciatica causes pain in the low back, buttocks, backs of the thighs, leg and sometimes the feet and toes.  The term sciatica refers to this set of symptoms rather than an actual diagnosis.  These symptoms are caused by a number of different conditions.  Most often a spinal disc has extended outwards from its natural position and causes nerve roots to become irritated and inflamed.

This nerve root (called the radicular nerve) connects with the largest nerve in the body - the Sciatic Nerve.  This is a nerve that travels down the lower body via the back of the leg and if it is compressed it causes pain in the areas mentioned above.  Doctors recommend that patients do sciatica back pain exercises for pain relief and to avoid problems in the future.  Bed rest is not advises as this will only worsen the condition and lengthen recovery time.

Why is this so?  When we aren't active the muscles in the back and spinal cord become lazy and don't support the back well.  Keeping these muscles strong makes the back less likely to become injured by bending, twisting and lifting.  When we exercise it keeps the spinal discs healthy as movement moves nutrients and fluids around inside the discs.  Sciatica strength exercises are usually focused on making the back and stomach muscles stronger.

Stretching exercises prevent pain by making muscles strong and flexible.  When these muscles are tight and stiff they can cause pain.  But which sciatica pain relief exercises should you do?  This depends on the cause of the pain.  You might want to ask your doctor to refer you to a physical therapist, certified athletic trainer, chiropractor, physiatrist or other professional who is skilled in back pain treatment.  However, the first thing to do is to get the cause of your pain figured out.

Never treat sciatica with exercises until you know what is causing the problem.  This is because certain, more serious, conditions can cause similar pain.  These are usually rare but when they do occur will require medical attention.  Normal causes of Sciatica Pain include:  sciatica from a herniated disc, sciatica from spinal stenosis, sciatica from degenerative disc disease, sciatica from isthmic spondylolisthesis, sciatic pain from piriformis syndrome, sciatic pain from sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Treating your sciatica with particular exercises will depend on what is causing your pain.  Once you know what the problem is your doctor will be able to recommend an appropriate exercise program for you.  Typically exercises form part of a daily routine and may be done twice a day.  You should pay attention to holding your body correctly, moving appropriately and keeping a good posture.

Apart from treating sciatica with these strength exercises, you should also make sure to avoid straining the lower back, and learn how to lift items properly.  Always make sure that your back is adequately supported when sitting and avoid standing for long periods.
